Long Lost Family has returned to screens with more emotional stories of families being reunited

ITV's Long Lost Family aired an emotional development during the latest episode.

A new instalment of Born Without Trace aired on ITV1 on Monday (August 3). The series, which is presented by Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell, follows foundlings as they search for answers about why they were left as babies and try to find their birth families.

The first episode followed foundlings David Stevenson and Sarah Gray as they searched for answers.

In December 1960, David was discovered inside a locked apartment block in North-West London. He was found in the corridor on the second floor, outside one of the flats.

Over the years, David has revisited the building and had burning questions about why he was left in such a specific place and whether this provided any clues as to who his birth parents were.

During the episode, search lead Ariel Bruce and her team had a breakthrough on David's search. They learned that there was a strong connection to a particular Dutch family.

Two family members, including a woman called Marianne agreed to DNA tests, leading to the identification of David's mother, Petra, who sadly died in 2010.

The sad news that Petra had died was shared with David away from the cameras.

As she drove to meet David the day after learning about his birth mother's death, Davina said: "David's DNA had told him that he had French and Dutch ancestry. French privacy laws mean that there is very little DNA testing there and so we don't know who his French birth father is.

"But finally, I can bring him some answers. We've identified his birth mother and he has family in the Netherlands who can't wait to meet him."

Davina added: "We've told David away from the cameras that his mother has passed away."

Davina arrived at David's home, where she shared her support. "I know you got some difficult news last night. How have you been?" she asked.

David replied: "It's a shame because it closed an avenue that might have been open to me. I hope today to answer some questions that have been present my entire life."

After learning that Petra didn't have any more children, David said: "Oh wow. I find that surprising. And rather sad actually. That suggests that she lived her life not having a family of her own, having given up the one child that she did have."

David soon broke down in tears as he was handed a photograph of his birth mother as a young woman, as well as a letter from his cousin Bart.

"As I'm unable to meet Petra for myself, to meet people who were close to her would be very good," David said as he choked back tears.

Later in the episode, David travelled to Rotterdam for an emotional first meeting with his aunt Marianne and cousins Bart, Saskia and Jan. David expressed his profound gratitude and looked forward to what the future held.

At the end of the episode, an update was shared, which read: "David is in regular touch with his new found Dutch family. He supported both teams in the World Cup."
