The Aussies sit in the pack for the first lap — and what an incredibly talented pack it is, with five athletes having run under 3.50.

OLI HOARE GOES DOWN ON LAP TWO!

It looked like the South African runner just clipped him on the heels. To be honest, Hoare has done well to not get stepped on.

He’s a long way behind by the time he gets up, but he does have two laps to make it up.

They’re not setting a cracking pace, but it’s Scotland’s world record holder Josh Kerr who is leading and he is cruising.

Spencer pushes on the back straight of the final lap, while Kerr takes time on the final bend to urge the crowd louder and louder.

Spender is through in sixth.

Hoare finishes ninth.

There’s always argy-bargy in these events, but Hoare will likely appeal that. I think it may well be successful and he gets through to the final on Saturday. Let's hope so!

Victoria Belando Nicholson, Lakeisha Patterson and Emily Beecroft are competing for Australia in this women's 100m freestyle S9.

But you might be expecting the world record holder Alexa Leary to be competing in it too.

Well, unfortunately, earlier this year, before the Games got underway, Leary was reclassified as an S10 athlete.

Brittany Castelluzzo, Jessica Cole and Lizzy Dekkers all qualified for the women's 200m butterfly final.

Something to note in that event was the presence of Faye Rodgers, a para-athlete who is competing in the able bodied competition.

Rodgers was involved in a serious car accident on the way to training five years ago, suffering a complex open fracture to her right arm, multiple dislocations, and a severed ulnar nerve.

That means she lives with permanent elbow issues and cannot fully straighten her arm.

She won Paralympic gold in the 100 m butterfly S10 event in Paris, but won't get the chance to race for a medal here, swimming 10th fastest in the heats to miss out on the final.

Bruce McAvaney called the mile his race of the entire Commonwealth Games and heat one of two is underway folks.

There’s a huge cheer for the homegrown here Josh Kerr as his name is announced. He’s been the world record holder for a whopping 11 days.

For the Aussies, we have Adam Spencer and defending champion Oliver Hoare.

For those who prefer the metric system, it's about 1600m.

Confirmation that Aussie's Mia Gross and Monique Hanlon have both qualified for the semifinals of the women's 200m after both winning their heats.

Hanlon qualified fourth fastest. Gross qualified sixth fastest.

The semi finals kick off tomorrow!

Scottish hope Duncan Scott, a two-time Olympic champion, is out of the 200m final!

Incredible!

James Guy of England qualified fastest in a ridiculous time of 1:45.69, with Sam Short second with 1:45.90 and Harrison Turner third with 1:46.08.

Welshman Matt Richards swam a 1:46.50, and Northern Ireland's Jack McMillan just behind in 1:46.72.

New Zealand's Lewis Clareburt also made it, swimming 1:46.92, with a third Aussie Kai Taylor sneaking in with a 1:47.23.

Tokyo Olympic champion Thomas Dean faded badly in the closing stages, just sneaking in as the slowest qualifier.

Wow.

That could be the race of the Games.

Australians Monique Hanlon (23.21) and Mia Gross (23.21) ran excellent 200m heats and progress fourth and sixth fastest to the semifinals, where they will join automatic qualifier and 100m bronze medallist Torrie Lewis.

And Gross says we should be aiming for all three to make it through to the final.

"This is my second Commonwealth Games but my first as an individual athlete, so I wanted to got out there and make little Mia very proud and I think I did that," she says.

"I think we could have three Aussies in this final if we all run to our best capabilities.

"Torrie will obviously go out and smash it [in the semifinals]. Who's to say another Australian record isn't on the cards for her? Hopefully I can just lasso onto her and get myself a nice PB as well."

Gross says the energy from last night has carried into this morning.

"[Lachlan] Kennedy was out there warming up with us in the 200m and he was just on a high, so I wanted a bit of his magic that he came through the doors with, I was hoping to get some of that today myself."

Hanlon also felt the high.

"It's nice to ride on their high a little bit, we've been going so well so far, so it kind of gives you a little bit of momentum to keep going."

We just saw footage of Josh Kerr entering the stadium!

He is in the house folks.

We saw footage of him showing his security pass to the person on the door and… really… does he need to do that?

Is there anyone in Scotland who doesn't know who Kerr is right now?

It was only two weeks ago that the Scotsman broke the mile world record — set in 1999 — at the London Diamond League and instantly became a folk hero.

He'll be running in the heats in about 10 minutes.

There are some events at this Commonwealth Games that are missing some of the bigger names from the line up.

That ain't the case in the men's 200m.

Duncan Scott (Scotland) and Matt Richards (Wales) were finalists at the 2024 Olympics, while James Guy (England) made the final of the 2025 World Championships and is a former world champion in the event, as well as a three-time Olympic gold medallist.

Jack McMillan (NIR) was a heat swimmer in the British team that went on to win gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay, while Tom Dean (ENG) was in the gold medal winning quartet.

Sam Short, Harrison Turner and Kai Taylor are the Aussies in action.

Back to the heptathlon, Mia Scerri has so far jumped the furthest with her first jump of 6.29m.

Her third jump was 6.12, so it didn't count.

Tori West, who set a PB for the event on her second jump, has fouled on her third attempt. She's so far jumped the ninth furthest distance and she'll be stoked with that.

For the two Aussies, there's a short break before javelin in an hour.

In heat two of the women's 200m, Aussie Mia Gross looked amazing around the bend and finished strong, a long way ahead of most of the pack.

She finished in 23.21. That's the quickest time so far.

In the next heat, Monique Hanlon won from lane two with a time of 23.12 and now that's the quickest time so far.

Qualifying is all about timing — not placing — so the Aussies are looking good.

On a sour note, we're half way through the heats and we've already seen two athletes disqualified for stepping outside their lane on the bend. It looks accidental but it is ... I guess ... a short cut. So they don't post a time and can't qualify for the semis.

Sienna Toohey is a non-starter in the women's 200 breaststroke, I have no information on that I am afraid, but she is not normally a 200m swimmer and is going to be in the relay you'd expect, so perhaps she's saving herself for that.

Ella Ramsay was in that first heat though and she got through as fifth fastest, so did Tara Kinder, who qualified second fastest.

Home hope Angharad Evans, with one of the most sinuous, languidly beautiful breaststroke styles you'll ever see, was getting plenty of love and was the fastest qualifier.

Ahmedabad in India will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the centenary of the inaugural Empire Games in Hamilton, Canada.

Smart money is on that being a dry run for an Olympic bid for the Indian city, so I'd bet they'd be keen for it to take place.

They just have to make sure they’re in the fastest 17 times.

Torrie Lewis has automatically qualified for the semifinals.

That's better from Tori West and she knew it. She gets up and cheers after her second jump in the Heptathlon's long jump.

SHE'S JUMPED 6.13M AND IT'S A PB FOR HER IN THE HEPTATHLON!

With that, she's literally jumped from fifth into fourth place overall!

Mia Scerri's second jump is 6.14m which is behind her first jump and won't count.

The two Aussies are jumping one after the other in the long jump in the women's heptathlon.

Tori West hits 5.74m with her first jump.

She's deep in conversation with a coach afterwards, and you can see she wants better. And she is capable of it. She can jump well over 6m.

Next up, Mia Scerri comes out and flies. She jumps 6.29m with her first jump — just three centimetres shy of her best. That means she's already got a great score in the bank and can try to push the limits with her next two attempts.

Strong start from the Aussies!

Today we have the final three events of the women's heptathlon.

Yesterday we had the 100-metre hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m.

Today we have the long jump and javelin before the final 800m run.

The Aussies are doing well after day one.

Currently, we have Tori West in fifth place and Mia Scerri in third place.

They will be jumping second and third this morning as the long jump kicks off.
