A brand new 4K release of the absolute classic buddy cop comedy-action-thriller masterpiece Lethal Weapon — directed by the fabulous Richard Donner (yes, the same Richard Donner behind Superman) and written by the buddy cop master himself, Shane Black, is about to hit the shelves and your physical media collection.

Starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as the iconic Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, this film is an absolute must-watch for any fan of ‘80s action, buddy cop comedies, or, honestly, anyone who loves cinema. Lethal Weapon follows two unlikely police officers who are partnered up to take down a criminal enterprise involving drugs and murder. It’s a film that’s way ahead of its time, especially in the way it touches on themes like mental health and masculinity.

Riggs, a former Green Beret, is grappling with intense grief and suicidal thoughts after the death of his wife, and the film doesn’t shy away from these darker moments. It brings a real emotional weight that elevates it beyond your typical action flick. For a 1987 release, it’s surprisingly deep, and watching it today, you realise how ahead of the curve it really was.

The cast is stacked, too — not just Gibson and Glover, but also a fantastic supporting cast that elevates the actions and the comedy. The chemistry between the leads is just electric. The dialogue is sharp, the stunts are excellent, and Donner’s direction balances action, emotion, and character development perfectly. From the late ’70s through the ’90s, Donner was just on fire — and this film is a shining example of his skill in bringing heart and intensity to big-screen storytelling.

Now, the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release is a real treat. Not only does it look stunning, but it also comes packed with some thoughtful special features. One standout is “A Legacy of Inspiration: Remembering Richard Donner” — a heartfelt look back at Donner’s incredible career, featuring interviews and some great behind-the-scenes moments. There’s also “I’m Too Old for This: A Chemistry That Became Iconic”, which explores the Lethal Weapon series and how Gibson and Glover formed one of the most iconic cinematic partnerships of all time.

Even better, the 4K release includes both the theatrical and the director’s cut editions, offering two quite different takes on the film. It’s a fascinating comparison and a real bonus for fans who want to dive deeper into the story and characters. If you’re a fan of the genre — or just love great filmmaking — this is essential viewing. And if for some strange reason you’ve never seen Lethal Weapon, do yourself a favour and check it out. The new 4K edition drops on June 23rd, and it’s absolutely worth your time.
