Members of the local community have spoken of their shock at the fire, with many pointing out the church was still in regular use. David Stretton said: "So I heard about this on Facebook through the fire service. It is such a shame."

"I'm just hoping that they are able to rebuild it. It's still an active church and wasn't derelict, they still held congregations in there. It really is a real shame."

A man at the scene said: "It is very sad, that was a nice church. It was still being used as well." A hospital worker, who had come to take a video of the aftermath, said the church held special significance for many of his patients.

"It is upsetting, I've got patients who have gotten married at that church and they're always talking about it," he said. "It's tragic. To be honest with you, I think they'll end up knocking it down."

A spokesperson told the Mirror: "I can confirm several roads in the Jarrom Street area of Leicester have been closed while Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) deal with a fire at a church.

"The fire was reported to the force by LFRS at 11.36pm last night (Tuesday 28 July). No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire will be under investigation.

"An examination of the scene and assessment of the structure will be carried out in due course.

"Those travelling into the city are advised to avoid the area or find an alternative route. Updates regarding road closures will be published on the force’s Facebook page."

Leicestershire Live reporter Jasmine Siddon, who is at the scene, has described an unusual smell in the air on Jarrom Street.

She said: "The smell hits you as you walk down Jarrom Street, it actually smells more like that sort of scent when you walk into a church of frankincense and myrrh rather than burning.”

A spokesperson told the Mirror: "We received multiple calls at 23:17 yesterday (28 July) to reports of a fire at St Andrews Church on Jarrom Street in Leicester.

"Crews from Central, Eastern, Western, Wigston, Loughborough, Birstall and Hinckley, including our aerial ladder and turntable ladder platforms, have been tackling this large blaze throughout the night.

"There have been no casualties and all persons have been accounted for. The roof of the church has been severely damaged by the fire.

"We have been working with Leicestershire Police, and with Cadent and Western Power to isolate gas and electricity supplies, and several roads in the vicinity are currently closed to traffic.

"The cause for the fire is not yet known and this remains an ongoing incident at the time of writing (8am)."

St Andrew’s was built by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1860-2 and has been the parish church for this area of Leicester for more than 150 years.

It was built to cater for people living in the then-new houses in the area. Many of these houses were cleared in the 1950s and the area has dramatically changed through the development and growth of both the Leicester Royal Infirmary and De Montfort University.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service were reportedly called to St Andrew's Church on Jarrom Street at 23:17 BST on Tuesday.

At one point eight fire engines were at the and two high-reach appliances, as crews fought to bring the fire under control.

This morning the fire service is said to have scaled back its response although there were still firefighters on site.

The Mirror has contacted Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service for a update on the incident.

The latest statement from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Control is as follows: "There is an incident on Jarrom Street in Leicester City, this is sending smoke over the city. Please keep windows and doors closed!"

Firefighters have been working to control the fire that is believed to have started at around 1am. There are currently no further details.

One Reddit user has posted online that they can "smell and see it from my flat on other side of the city centre".

Another local has claimed that the sheer volume of smoke is "stinking out" the city centre.

From videos shared online part of the roof appears to be damaged in the blaze, this is yet to be confirmed by the Fire service.

The cause of the fire is also currently unknown.

According to social media users smoke could be smelt across the whole city.

One Reddit user said they could "smell and see it from my flat on other side of the city centre".
