The application deadline for cardamom replanting under the Kerala Climate Resilient Agri-Value Chain Modernisation (KERA) project—a flagship initiative supported by the World Bank has been extended to March 25.
According to officials, the project aims to replace low-yielding cardamom plants with high-yielding varieties across the Idukki district. The initiative targets the replanting of 3,500 hectares of cardamom plantations and is expected to benefit a total of 7,000 farmers.
Under the scheme, participating farmers will receive ₹50,000 in both the first and second years of the project. Additionally, subsidies will be provided to nurseries producing high-yielding cardamom plants. Farmers and groups that have invested in obtaining Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification will also have their certification costs reimbursed.
An awareness seminar for cardamom farmers was held at the Puttady Spices Park in Idukki on Monday. Spices Board Chairperson Sangeetha Vishwanathan inaugurated the event, while KERA Field officer Abhijith provided a detailed briefing on the project. The seminar also featured various technical sessions regarding modern cardamom farming practices.
