Judge Julieta Makintach, who often spoke out about gender issues in Argentina’s legal system, resigned after her actions caused the collapse of the trial investigating Diego Maradona’s death.

Makintach had built a public profile as an advocate for judicial reforms and gender equality, participating in interviews and public events on these topics.

During the high-profile trial to determine if Maradona’s medical team was responsible for his death, Makintach allowed a documentary crew to film inside the courthouse. She did not inform or get approval from the other judges or lawyers.

Evidence later showed she intended to play a central role in the documentary, which was being produced with her active involvement. At first, she claimed the filming was a private interview, but official investigations revealed it was a planned series with her as the main figure.

Her unauthorized actions broke court rules and judicial ethics. As a result, the court annulled the entire trial, voiding all witness statements and evidence collected over months.

The process must now restart with a new panel of judges, delaying justice for both Maradona’s family and the accused medical professionals.

Her record of unpaid traffic fines further damaged her credibility. Makintach’s pursuit of publicity and disregard for judicial rules undermined public trust in Argentina’s courts.

Her actions forced the justice system to start over in a case that had already drawn intense national and international attention. This case highlights the risks when a judge’s personal interests interfere with their responsibility to deliver impartial justice.
