Jonathan Davis, best known for his role as Pope in Netflix’s hit young adult drama Outer Banks, has been cast as hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg in an upcoming biopic from Universal Pictures. The film marks the first project under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment as the legendary music label moves into motion pictures.

Davis, a Houston native, also appeared in Netflix’s Do Revenge, alongside Sophie Turner and Maya Hawke. His casting signals a bold and exciting direction for the definitive telling of Snoop Dogg’s life and legacy.

The film will trace the rise of Calvin Broadus Jr., who burst onto the West Coast hip-hop scene under the name Snoop Doggy Dogg, later shortened to the now globally recognized Snoop Dogg. Known for his laid-back delivery and razor-sharp lyricism, Snoop became a defining voice on Death Row Records. His collaborations with Dr. Dre on the iconic debut album Doggystyle helped solidify his place in music history.

The biopic will be directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Dolemite Is My Name) and produced by Snoop Dogg himself, along with Brian Grazer and Death Row Pictures.

This project becomes Universal’s third major hip-hop-focused film, following the critically acclaimed 8 Mile, starring Eminem, and Straight Outta Compton, which chronicled the meteoric rise of N.W.A.
