Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayFresh off the success of 2024’s Wicked, Mattel and Warner Bros. have enlisted the talents of Jon M. Chu. The filmmaker has signed on to direct a live-action Hot Wheels movie, Deadline reports.
Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier, the writer-director duo behind Creed II and They Cloned Tyrone, will pen the script, with production handled by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Chu’s Electric Somewhere.
Inspired by Mattel’s bestselling car toy line, Hot Wheels is billed as an action film and will feature some of the world’s most admired vehicles.
Mattel Studios’ president and chief content officer Robbie Brenner praised Chu, telling Deadline: “Jon’s ability to craft rich, elaborate worlds with a distinct point of view makes him the ideal storyteller to bring Hot Wheels to life. His films are visual spectacles — true eye candy — but what sets them apart is how he weaves unforgettable narratives within those stunning frames.”
The director further expressed his excitement for the film: “Hot Wheels has always been about more than speed — it’s about imagination, connection and the thrill of play. Bringing that spirit to the big screen is an incredible opportunity.”
The film seems to be a perfect recipe for critical and commercial success. Mattel Studios’ last cinematic venture, Barbie, grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide and received eight Oscar nominations. Chu achieved similar success with Wicked, with the film surpassing $750 million and ten total Oscar nominations. Mattel has just finished filming on their new Masters Of The Universe adaptation, starring Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, with Travis Knight directing.
Although there’s no confirmed release date, fans will eagerly anticipate more Hot Wheels news to come.
