External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday discussed the escalating tensions in West Asia with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul as the US-Israeli war on Iran continues to disrupt access to the Strait of Hormuz, which supplies 20% of oil and natural gas supplies worldwide.

“Exchanged views with FM @JoWadephul of Germany on the ongoing conflict in West Asia," Jaishankar wrote on X.

The External Affairs Minister also shared a “good conversation" with his South Korean counterpart Cho Hyun. “Discussed advancing our bilateral agenda. As also the situation in West Asia, including its energy implications," he added.

This came a day after Jaishankar discussed the situation in West Asia with his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani. Several countries, particularly in Asia, are rattled as crude oil prices witnessed extreme volatility over the last 24 hours, rising as high as $115 on Monday.

Countries across South Asia are implementing emergency measures to cope with rising fuel prices and electricity shortages, driven by disruptions in global energy supplies amid the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran. Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka have each announced actions to conserve fuel and electricity and manage the impact on citizens.

What’s India Doing On Energy Crisis?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a meeting with Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to review LPG supplies and assess potential disruptions arising from the ongoing war.

The Union government on Tuesday invoked the Essential Commodities Act (EC Act) to protect the domestic fuel market from potential disruptions. The Petroleum Ministry said a control order has been issued directing refineries and petrochemical units to ramp up liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production and channel key hydrocarbon streams into the LPG pool to ensure uninterrupted availability of cooking gas nationwide.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation said the Ministry has initiated steps to increase LPG output and secure adequate stocks for household consumers as well as essential non-domestic sectors.

Donald Trump On Iran War

US President Donald Trump offered mixed signals on the conclusion of the conflict, saying the war in Iran is “pretty much over". However, he also warned that any attempt by Iran to disrupt oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz would trigger a response “twenty times harder" than they have been hit thus far.

“We took a little excursion" to the Middle East “to get rid of some evil. And, I think you’ll see it’s going to be a short-term excursion," Trump told Republican lawmakers at his golf club near Miami. In an apparent response to Trump’s remarks published in Iranian state media, a spokesperson for the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, Ali Mohammad Naini, said “Iran will determine when the war ends."

Trump also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, on Monday, regarding a “quick settlement" of the Iran war. The development came as Russia pledged “unwavering support" to Iran’s new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
