The Space Applications Centre (SAC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Ahmedabad, has sanctioned a ₹22 lakh research project to Andhra University for studying rip currents and developing tools based on artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite technology to enhance beach safety along the Visakhapatnam coast.

The two-year project will be jointly undertaken by Arun Kumar of SAC, ISRO, Ahmedabad, and C.V. Naidu, Head of the Department of Meteorology and Oceanography, Andhra University.

According to Mr. Naidu, the study will focus on monitoring atmospheric and oceanographic parameters associated with rip currents and predicting their occurrence along the Visakhapatnam coast. The researchers will also develop AI-based techniques for beach safety monitoring and warning systems aimed at improving the safety of beach visitors and tourists.

The project is expected to assist agencies such as the Coastal Security Police, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), the Tourism Department and other beach management authorities in taking timely preventive and safety measures.

The researchers said the study could help reduce drowning incidents and fatalities at beaches, improve public awareness of beach safety and strengthen early warning capabilities for hazardous rip currents.

The project also seeks to demonstrate the effective use of AI and satellite technologies in coastal safety management, disaster-risk reduction and public safety.
