Ahead of Saturday night’s game, which ended in a heartbreaking 38-35 defeat to Miami, the source described Belichick as frustrated that news of the breakup had become public just before the biggest game of his season.

“He would much rather this had remained private,” the source said. “The last thing he wanted was another distraction, but unfortunately, this is now something they have to deal with at the worst possible time. It is certainly not how he wanted the week to unfold.”

The obvious question has been why the couple parted ways. In public, Belichick and Hudson appeared devoted to each other, supporting one another’s careers and attending high-profile events together.

“Their relationship became bigger news than either of them wanted,” the source said. “Bill was trying to protect it while also giving it the attention he felt it deserved.”

“Looking back, that became a major reason his attention was pulled away from football last season.
