Minister Hardeep Puri credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's diplomatic outreach for enabling India to redirect crude procurement rapidly.

India has diversified its LPG imports to include cargoes from the United States, Norway, Canada, Algeria and Russia, the minister said.

India has diversified its LPG imports to include cargoes from the United States, Norway, Canada, Algeria and Russia, the minister said.

India’s crude supply position is secure and volumes already secured exceed what the disrupted Strait of Hormuz would have delivered, Oil Minister Hardeep Puri told Parliament, as the country entered its 13th day of navigating the disruption to global energy flows amid West Asia conflict.

“India’s crude supply position is secure and volumes secured exceed what the Hormuz would have delivered," Puri said in the Lok Sabha, adding that non-Hormuz crude sourcing had risen to 70% of total imports. Refineries are operating at high-capacity utilisation and the availability of petrol and diesel is “fully secure," he said.

India has diversified its LPG imports to include cargoes from the United States, Norway, Canada, Algeria and Russia, the minister said. The Strait of Hormuz- the narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil and 20% of its natural gas passes daily- has been effectively closed to commercial shipping for 13 days following the military confrontation between Iran, Israel and the United States.

“For the first time in recorded history, the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed to commercial shipping," Puri told the House, adding, “The world has not faced a movement like this in modern energy history."

Before the crisis, around 25% of India’s crude imports transited through the strait. The government has since moved aggressively to reroute supply, with non-Hormuz sourcing now accounting for 70% of imports.

Puri credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic outreach for enabling India to redirect crude procurement rapidly.

“Thanks to the Honourable Prime Minister’s outstanding diplomatic outreach and goodwill, India has secured crude volumes that exceed what the disrupted Strait of Hormuz could have delivered in the same period," he said.

The Hormuz crisis, now in its second week, is the direct consequence of the ongoing military conflict in West Asia. Fighting between Iran, Israel and the United States has rendered the strait effectively impassable for commercial tankers, cutting off a chokepoint that serves as the primary export route for Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the UAE, Kuwait and Iran itself- nations that together account for a significant share of global crude output.

The disruption has triggered emergency responses across Asia, where import-dependent economies have scrambled to ration consumption and seek alternative supply.
