Match report: Blues' rally falls short as Lions add to Voss pain

Carlton have flirted with a second Gabba miracle in three seasons before Michael Voss's men fell to a seventh straight AFL loss.

The Brisbane Lions looked set to canter clear when leading by 49 points early in the third term, before the Blues surged to within 10 of the lead.

The 14.16 (100) to 13.11 (89) result came barely two years after the Blues came from 46 behind to beat the Lions by one point at the Gabba.

They couldn't finish the job on Friday, but after coughing up six first-half leads to lose in eight games already this season, there was a different narrative for Voss and his besieged Blues (1-8) to digest.

The Lions dominated from the outset, venturing inside the Blues' 50 five times before eventually kicking a goal.

Lachie Neale (33 disposals, nine clearances, one goal) led the assault at clearances, and the one-way traffic eventually told as Logan Morris (four goals for the game) and big men Sam Draper and Darcy Fort added majors.

Brisbane led clearances 24-11 and centre bounce 10-2 at half-time and it was more of the same when they resumed, even with Neale copping a tag.

Hugh McCluggage's goal was a sixth straight for Brisbane — the seventh time the Blues had conceded that many consecutively this season.

But that's where it turned, a high-flying Morris spilling a mark and Ben Ainsworth ending a 40-minute goal drought for the Blues.

Jagga Smith and Patrick Cripps (32 touches, nine clearances, one goal) followed suit, and Mitch McGovern (three goals) snuck two goals in the final stages of the quarter to make it a 20-point game.

It was a complete turnaround, the Blues up 16 in contested possessions, seven in clearances and 14 in inside-50s.

Harry McKay (three goals) goaled immediately from the restart, with a Kai Lohmann goal ending a six-major Blues run.

Fort hit the post, and Levi Ashcroft and Neale followed up with frustrating misses to keep the Blues in it.

Ashcroft made no mistake on his next chance, the goal sparking a push-and-shove that gifted him a free kick and chance for another.

He pushed it wide but the damage, with six minutes to play, was done.

Nobody told the Blues though, with McKay, McGovern and Will Hayward (three majors) booting goals to make it a 10-point game with three minutes to play.

But Neale finally iced it, intercepting a handball and snapping truly to settle the nerves of 31,147 fans.

Match report: Bulldogs scrap tense win over Port in thriller

The Western Bulldogs have banked a dramatic two-point victory over Port Adelaide to climb into the AFL's top eight.

The Dogs' Harvey Gallagher scored the go-ahead behind with only 24 seconds left in a tense 10.14 (74) to 10.12 (72) triumph at Adelaide Oval.

The Bulldogs (five wins, four losses) claimed eighth spot ahead of weekend games, while Port remains 13th with three wins and six defeats.

The Bulldogs were superbly served by on-ballers Ryley Sanders (31 disposals), skipper Marcus Bontempelli (30, one goal, 10 tackles) and Ed Richards (27 touches, one goal).

Dogs attackers Aaron Naughton, Rhylee West and Will Lewis booted two goals each.

Port's acting captain Zak Butters — against the club considered the frontrunner for his signature should he leave the Power at season-end — was typically prolific with 30 possessions.

Power spearhead Mitch Georgiades kicked 4.4, while halfback Kane Farrell (27 touches) and winger Jase Burgoyne (21) were busy.

The Bulldogs began brightly, scoring the initial three goals to race to a 20-0 advantage as the Power lost influential defender Miles Bergman to a toe injury.

Field umpire Daniel Johanson was also a casualty, felled by contact from Bulldog Ed Richards in the second minute and taken off the ground.

The Power's Georgiades booted two goals, both from technical holding free kicks against Buku Khamis, as the home side crept within seven points.

The Dogs increased their lead to 13 points, 6.2 to 4.1, at quarter-time via a late Naughton goal.

Port's Ewan Mackinlay reduced the deficit with an eye-catching major early in the second stanza, and when young teammate Jack Whitlock converted a 45m shot from a tight angle, the Power were only five points down.

The Bulldogs steadied with two strikes from Will Lewis to hold a handy 18-point buffer at halftime, 9.5 to 6.5, when the visitors led the inside-50 count 31-18 and Port's Bergman, after trying to return to action, was ruled out at the break.

The Power again made inroads in the third quarter, with Georgiades slotting his third goal and Logan Evans sinking a 55m bomb to reduce the margin to six points.

But after Evans's long-range launch in the 11th minute, both clubs couldn't score another goal — the Dogs recorded just one behind for the term and led by five points at three quarter time, 9.6 to 8.7.

The visitors gained breathing space six minutes into the final term when West ran into an open goal for a 13-point break.

Georgiades responded with his fourth goal about 10 minutes later and teammate Corey Durdin threaded a set shot to leave the hosts one point in arrears with two minutes and 34 seconds remaining.

The Power drew level with a rushed behind 30 seconds later, but the Dogs pressed forward in the dying stages, with Gallagher's checkside behind putting them in front, before Lewis scored another behind after the siren.

'I don't coach for my job, I coach to build a culture,' says Carlton coach Michael Voss

Blues coach Michael Voss has spoken to the media after his side's 11-point defeat to Brisbane.

"It's a familiar narrative," he said, of his team falling short.

Voss said his side's fightback after half-time was good, but it wasn't enough.

"We're very much not happy with that," he said.

"We can't be comfortable with mediocrity."

The Blues have one win after nine games, and speculation has been rife about the club making a call on Voss's future.

But he rejected any suggestion that the pressure was motivating him.

"I don't coach for my job," Voss said. "I coach to build a culture.

"Hopefully by the time I leave [the club] we will know what that looks like."

Lions must bring four-quarter pressure against Cats, says Lachie Neale

Lachie Neale has also spoken to Fox Footy after winning the Robert Walls Medal.

He deflected, saying he thought a couple of others could have won the award, including Ryan Lester (who had 20 disposals and 11 intercept possessions).

Like Morris, he touched on Carlton's comeback - although he claimed not to have heard Chris Fagan's spray at the final break.

Asked if it was Carlton lifting or Brisbane taking the foot off the pedal, he said it was a bit of both.

"They stepped up in the contest and clearance work," he said.

"That third quarter we got annihilated, we couldn't close the space and they could find easy targets.

"If we can't do it for four quarters (deny the opposition space), we'll be in trouble against the Cats next week."

Will Lewis takes a mark with a couple of seconds left and that'll do it, they've held on in an absolute heart-stopper!

Lewis sends his shot after the siren to the left and the Bulldogs collectively breathe a HUGE sigh of relief.

They've held on despite kicking a remarkable 1.8 in the final quarter.

That one goal, kicked by Rhylee West, was incredibly the only Bulldogs goal of the second half, but they've got the four points, which is the main thing.

The ball was in congestion on the wing for the best part of the final couple of minutes, but Ryley Sanders was able to get a clean kick inside 50.

Sanders's kick found Arty Jones uncontested, but Jones spilled the mark and chaos ensued.

As the ball threatened to trickle over the boundary line in the forward pocket, Jones managed to keep it in play and handballed over the top to Harvey Gallagher, who snapped a behind from close range with 22 seconds remaining.

Kane Farrell attempted to go down the guts with the kick-in, but the Bulldogs were able to intercept the ball, leading to Lewis's shot on goal.

Two heart-stopping defeats in a matter of weeks for the Power at the Adelaide Oval, spare a thought for Josh Carr's campers.

Georgiades can't make the distance on set shot

A lovely transition from D50 this time from Port Adelaide allows them to get the ball through the Dogs press.

Zak Butters with a lovely chipped kick to Corey Durdin, who then finds Mitch Georgiades inside 50.

This is a tough set shot from Mitch, and it doesn't quite make the distance and is punched through for a behind.
