Key Facts

  • —What is happening On Friday, 16 October 2026, Honduras’ Supreme Court assigned two natural judges: one to decide whether to lift the migration alert on former president Juan Orlando Hernández, one to take a corruption file.
  • —Why it matters The alert dates from the 2022 United States extradition request, and the judiciary says the US criminal case against him is closed, so the ruling decides whether he can leave Honduras.
  • —The numbers Two judges were named, the alert has run since April 2022, and the judiciary says the judges could take up the files next week, after the weekend.
  • —Who is who Hernández governed Honduras from 2014 to 2022, and the Supreme Court is the country’s highest court; Melvin Duarte speaks for the judiciary’s communications unit.
  • —What to watch Watch for the judges to take up both files from Monday, 19 October, and for a ruling on whether the alert is suspended and its record removed.
  • —What it means for you Hernández’s travel status started with a US request, so a ruling lifting the alert would clear the way for him to leave Honduras, which US officials and travellers may notice.

Honduras’ Supreme Court has named two judges to handle the former president’s travel restriction and a corruption file. The judiciary says the US criminal case is closed.

The Hernández alert, a migration alert on former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández, now has a judge. Proceso Digital reports that the Supreme Court (CSJ) named two natural judges on Friday, 16 October 2026.

One judge will rule on the defence request to lift the alert, the other on a corruption case. Melvin Duarte, who heads the judiciary’s communications unit, announced the choices, Proceso Digital reports.

What the Court Decided on the Hernández Alert

A natural judge is the court officer who holds jurisdiction over a given matter. Duarte said the full plenary of the Supreme Court made both designations, according to Proceso Digital.

The first judge will hear the request to suspend the migration alert. The second will take a file the Public Ministry, the prosecution service, is investigating for alleged corruption linked to the former president.

Proceso Digital does not name either judge. It also does not say whether the corruption file is the same case as Pandora II, which is covered below.

Why the Migration Alert Still Stands

Duarte said the alert dates from April 2022, when Hernández was detained after a US request, Proceso Digital reports. He said it remains in force, and that a judge’s order is needed to suspend it and erase the record.

Duarte argued that a natural judge issued the alert, so the same kind of judge must lift it. He also said, per Proceso Digital, that the criminal case against Hernández in the United States was extinguished, meaning closed.

A migration alert is a registry entry held by the National Migration Institute (INM). It is meant to flag a person who is barred from leaving the country.

The Defence Request That Started It

On Saturday, 26 September, lawyer Angie Colindres said the defence had asked the Supreme Court to have the INM cancel the alert. La Tribuna and Infobae both carried her statement.

She argued the alert should have lapsed once Hernández was extradited in April 2022. She also said the measure violates his rights to due process, defence and free movement, according to La Tribuna.

Colindres said the alert came from the US extradition process and is separate from the Pandora II case, Infobae reported. In that case, Infobae reports, a judge issued a definitive dismissal on Tuesday, 1 September 2026.

Infobae quotes spokesman Carlos Silva saying the judge found the money’s traceability to political financing unproven. The Public Ministry and the State Attorney General’s Office (PGR) have appealed, asking a Court of Appeals to review the dismissal.

What It Means for US Readers

The alert began with a US request, so any ruling touches a case that Honduran judiciary officials call closed. A decision to lift it would end a restriction that has outlasted the extradition itself.

For travellers and businesses, nothing changes at the border or in visa rules from this announcement. It is a procedural step, with no ruling yet on the alert.

For US officials who follow Central America, the case shows how Honduran courts handle the aftermath of extradition cases. It also shows that the Pandora II appeals, which Infobae reports are pending, run separately.

What Is Not Known

This article rests on a single outlet, Proceso Digital, for the court announcement of 16 October. La Prensa, El Heraldo, La Tribuna, Hondudiario and Criterio had no matching report when checked.

The names of the two judges, the date of any hearing and the outcome are not known. No source reviewed says whether Hernández is in Honduras today or plans to travel.

The corruption file’s contents and any link to Pandora II are not known, and the Pandora II details rest on Infobae alone. Duarte’s statement that the US case is closed is attributed to him and was not checked against a US court record.

What Comes Next

Duarte said the judges could take up the files next week, which begins on Monday, 19 October. That would let the court reduce its caseload, according to Proceso Digital.

A ruling would not by itself end the Pandora II appeals, which run on a separate track. Nor would it settle the corruption file, which a different judge will handle.
