US President Donald Trump announced an agreement had been reached for the disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza as well as the withdrawal of Israeli troops.

Hamas has agreed to "complete disarm" in Gaza, a senior official from the militant group has said.

The dramatic development comes after Donald Trump announced overnight that his Board of Peace had reached what he described as an "historic agreement".

A senior Hamas official told the BBC the group had agreed to the proposal, although an official statement has yet to be released.

Announcing the agreement on Truth Social overnight, Trump said it would be carried out in "carefully structured phases".

The US President said Hamas had agreed to surrender its weapons, while the group's tunnel network and military infrastructure would also be dismantled.

He added that the withdrawal of Israeli forces would eventually pave the way for the establishment of a "new Palestinian government", describing the proposal as a "critical step towards Gaza finally being governed by a new Palestinian government".

Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "One year ago there was a violent raging war, humanitarian crisis and hostages kept in brutal captivity.

"We have made historic progress and there is still much work to do. Congratulations to all on this amazing development that everybody said could never be achieved."

A statement from the Board of Peace said Hamas had agreed to a "detailed roadmap" for disarmament, describing the agreement as a "historic breakthrough".

It added: "For the first time, Hamas has committed to an actionable plan for relinquishing all its weapons, which will be followed by Israeli withdrawal from Gaza."

Hamas negotiator Ghazi Hamad said the militant group had made "concessions for the sake of our people in the Gaza Strip".

According to Hamas officials, a committee formed by the Board of Peace will help administer Gaza while overseeing the surrender and storage of the group's weapons.

He added: "The agreement contains a clear provision stating that Israel must commit to and implement its obligations. If Israel does not implement the agreement, neither will we."

The war began after Hamas-led militants launched the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza, where fighting has continued for more than 1,000 days.
