The Newcastle Knights are counting the cost of a 36-16 win over Manly after superstars Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Brown both missed the entire second half at Brookvale Oval with injuries.

Ponga was cut down by a hamstring injury while scoring a 90-metre team try and tried to play on before succumbing, while halfback Dylan Brown suffered a left knee injury while setting up a try for Ponga's replacement, Fletcher Hunt, just before half-time.

"It's not ideal two playmakers going down, but the boys did the job for us massive," Ponga said.

"Last time I did a hammy was 2018 I think, so I don't really know [how bad it is]. Fingers crossed it's best news, I want to be back out there next week."

Their injuries come after fellow spine member five-eighth Fletcher Sharpe suffered a knee injury in their season opener in Las Vegas.

In Sunday's second game to wrap up round two, the Dolphins stormed back from 14-0 down to beat the Titans and become the first Queensland team to win a game this season.

NRL Sunday — round two live

Sun, 10:00amSun 15 Mar 2026 at 10:00am

And that's where we'll leave you

After a big weekend of live footy, it's time to hang up the boots for another round.

Here's a reminder of how things played out in round two:

I think we're still learning exactly what a lot of these teams are capable of, but the picture is definitely becoming clearer.

We'll see you back here on Thursday for the Jaeman Salmon Bowl between the Bulldogs and Raiders.

Kristian Woolf happy to see his team win a game with defence

Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf says he was happy to see his team turn it around after a sub-par first half.

"I thought we looked like we're lacking a bit of confidence in the first half.

"I just thought we defended really well for the [whole] game.

"Tonight our defence won us the game and I don't think we said that too many times last year."

'We're in the business of winning, not competing': Hannay on Titans

Gold Coast coach Josh Hannay says his team was better this week, but still not good enough. Obviously.

"A lot of improvement but we're in the business of winning, not competing hard. We put ourselves in a position to win that game but ultimately a couple of things fell apart under pressure."

Hannay says his team struggled to turn momentum, which is having more impact on games this year than previously.

Asked about referee Liam Kennedy, Hannay is clearly more frustrated with the rules themselves than the application of them.

"He's officiating the game they want the game officiated. They're all [the referees] doing their job."

Hannay says it is hard to keep up with the constant changes in rules and interpretations.

"You adjust to how the game is being officiated or played and then it changes again they'll crack down on something else. And those who adapt the quickest win."

The NRL ladder after round two

OK, a few things when looking at this ladder:

  • There are five winless teams and three of them are from Queensland
  • Manly remain one of the most frustrating teams in the league, looking so good at times against Canberra last week and then losing to an injury-ravaged Knights today
  • If you'd predicted four teams would have two wins after round two, would Newcastle have been on your list?
  • In a season where tries are being scored at will, Penrith only having conceded six points in two games is wild

What are your key takeaways so far?

FULL-TIME: The Dolphins win and open Queensland's account for 2026

(Getty)

After trailing 14-0 with half an hour left, the Dolphins have stormed back to beat the Titans in the local derby and become the first Queensland team to win a game in the 2026 NRL season.

It was a pretty ordinary first half but the game really came to life in the second.

Credit to the Dolphins, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow in particular, for coming up with the game-winning plays Kristian Woolf would surely like to see an 80-minute effort from his charges.

Titans fans can also be proud to see a bit more resilience from their side after the 50-10 loss to start the season. It wasn't the most polished performance in history, but the defensive effort was certainly there and it took some freak plays to beat them.

Sun, 8:59amSun 15 Mar 2026 at 8:59am

78' The Titans miss out on one of their last shots

They go left and Lachlan Ilias has AJ Brimson and Phil Sami outside him, but his pass goes in between them and over the sideline!

They may only get one more set in this game.

Sun, 8:57amSun 15 Mar 2026 at 8:57am

76' Huge defence from the Titans gives them another chance

The Dolphins produce one of their best defensive sets of the game to force a shallow kick from the Titans and Selwyn Cobbo charges back into the line.

But he's monstered by the Jojo Fifita and Moeaki Fotuaika and loses the ball.

Titans go on the attack from 30 metres out.

The Flying Hammer puts the Dolphins in front!

Isaiya Katoa puts a high ball perhaps a little shallower and more central than Keano Kini expects, and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow arrives on the scene, outleaping his Titans counterpart, making a clean catch and diving in under the posts!

Jamayne Isaako converts and the Dolphins lead 18-14 with six minutes left.

Key Event

Sun, 8:46amSun 15 Mar 2026 at 8:46am

THE DOLPHINS GO THE LENGTH!

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow explodes through the line on the kick return and gets within a few metres of the tryline before being brought down.

No panic from the Dolphins as Hammer takes the tackle and they reload, firing it out to the right, with Jake Averillo diving over on the two-man overlap out wide.

Jamayne Isaako converts and the Dolphins trail 14-12 with 11 minutes to go.

We've got a game, folks!

Sun, 8:39amSun 15 Mar 2026 at 8:39am

60' The Titans save another try

Keano Kini knocks on as he tries to catch a bomb and the Dolphins pack a scrum 10 metres out.

They spin it left straight away and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow finds Selwyn Cobbo, who looks certain to score until four Titans — Keano Kini, Jojo Fifita, Aram Hau and Lahclan Ilias — arrive just in time to somehow hold him up.

Kini's been left limping after the initial high-speed contact with Cobbo, but he's playing through it.

The Dolphins are gifted their first try by the Titans

Kodi Nikorima's kick is batted dead and the Dolphins get a dropout.

Lachlan Ilias goes short and Phil Sami does a great job to bat it back, but it's straight to Kulikefu Finefeuiaki, who storms over.

I'm sure Dolphins teammate Herbie Farnworth was celebrating on the other side of the field, but I wonder if he had a brief traumatic flashback to the 2023 grand final just then.

Sun, 8:27amSun 15 Mar 2026 at 8:27am

50' Keano Kini stops a CERTAIN try

The Dolphins have the Titans dead to rights on the right wing as Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow finds Jamayne Isaako, but Keano Kini arrives from nowhere to knock the ball out at the last second.

Sun, 8:21amSun 15 Mar 2026 at 8:21am

Cooper Bai storms through truly woeful defence for his first NRL try

A Klese Haas charge attracts three defenders right on the tryline. He plays it quickly and Sam Verrills gets out of dummy half, turning it under to Cooper Bai, who sees Oryn Keeley still on the ground at marker after the tackle and just runs straight past him.

That's the first try in the NRL career of Cooper Bai, who WON'T be going to the Storm next year. Keeley, however, will. Craig Bellamy won't allow that sort of thing, Oryn.

Sun, 8:20amSun 15 Mar 2026 at 8:20am

45' Another brilliant try-saver

Klese Haas sparks a line break with an offload over the top to Keano Kini.

The Titans charge up the right wing and Jojo Fifita finds Arama Hau, but the Dolphins arrive late to hold him up just in time.

Sun, 8:15amSun 15 Mar 2026 at 8:15am

41' Dolphins kick off in the second half

And there are just 40 minutes left in round two of the 2026 NRL season.

Key Event

Sun, 8:00amSun 15 Mar 2026 at 8:00am

HALF-TIME: Titans lead Dolphins 8-0 after a messy 40 minutes

(Getty)

The first half ends with a typically frenetic attacking raid by the Dolphins.

No real rhyme or reason to any of it but it ends with a decent Herbie Farnworth grubber that Keano Kini just arrives in time to knock dead.

I can't say it's been a great game so far, but hey, at least it's close.

Sun, 7:59amSun 15 Mar 2026 at 7:59am

39' Huge try-saver by the Dolphins

The Titans run it on the last and the powerful Sialetili Faeamani gets low and tries to power over the line, but Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Herbie Farnworth are able to get under him.

Key Event

Sun, 7:53amSun 15 Mar 2026 at 7:53am

Jojo has a bizarre adventure to score the first try of the game

The high kick goes up and the Dolphins drop it but manage to break upfield with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow. They spin it left and Connelly Lemuelu drops the pass from Isaiya Katoa, so Kurtis Morrin pounces and takes off into the backfield, firing a ball out to Jojo Fifita to dive in.

Look at this mess:

This has been an absolute bludger so far.

Sun, 7:48amSun 15 Mar 2026 at 7:48am

29' Another mistake by the Titans as we await our first try

We're coming up on half an hour elapsed and we still have no tries scored.

I can't say it's because of spectacularly good defence, it's more due to mistakes at one, with Beau Fermor knocking on a short ball.
