Late Friday night, Canada walked away from the negotiating table in Washington, D.C., ending the talks without a deal to avoid President Donald Trump’s threat of a 50 per cent tariff on Canadian goods. Prime Minister Mark Carney called the negotiating team home after the U.S. introduced last-minute demands, throwing into question the validity of any possible deal. Mackenzie Gray reports. The new 50 per cent tariff will make it much more expensive for many Canadian businesses to export to the U.S. – adding to the pain many sectors had already been feeling. Lumber, steel and auto producers had been hopeful that tariffs would be lowered because of these talks. As Jasmine King reports, the financial impact of the trade impasse is only beginning. Americans will also pay the price for the tariffs their president is imposing – in the form of higher prices. But the move also carries political risk for Donald Trump.
