Encompassing fresh, chilled and frozen beef, worldwide purchases of imported beef totaled US$69.9 billion in 2024.
The overall value of beef imports grew by 39.1% for all importing countries from five years earlier in 2020 when beef purchases were valued at $50.2 billion.
Year over year, globally imported beef inflated in total cost by 10.5% compared to $63.2 billion starting from 2023.
The 5 biggest importers of fresh, chilled and frozen beef (inclusive) are mainland China, United States of America, South Korea, Japan and Italy. Collectively, that powerful cohort of major beef buyers bought almost half (48.9%) of globally imported beef.
By meat type, global imports of frozen beef (53.5% overall) in 2024 compared to fresh or chilled beef (46.5%).
From a continental perspective, buyers in Asian countries consumed the highest dollar worth of imported beef during 2024 with purchases valued at $32.2 billion or 46.1% of the global total. In second place were importers based in Europe at 27.4% while another 19.4% of worldwide beef imports was delivered to customers in North America.
Smaller percentages were imported into Latin America (4.3%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (2.6%), then Oceania (0.2%) led by New Zealand, French Polynesia and Australia.
For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefixes are 0201 for fresh or chilled beef and 0202 for frozen beef.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing beef importers since 2020 were: United Arab Emirates (up 125.4%), Mexico (up 123.1%), Spain (up 94.2%) and France (up 72.6%).
Japan was the lone top competitor to reduce its imported beef purchases, recording a -6.2% slowdown.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing frozen beef importers since 2020 were: United Arab Emirates (up 203%), Saudi Arabia (up 117.8%), Vietnam (up 103.3%) and the United States of America (up 82.6%).
The pair of top buyer countries that posted declines in their imported frozen beef purchases was Hong Kong (down -56.4% from 2020) and Egypt (down -29.1%).
