A more international and upgraded lantern show is set to light up Hong Kong’s Victoria Park during the Mid-Autumn Festival next month, as part of the city’s efforts to entice locals and tourists alike.

The International Lantern Spectacular, organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, will be held at the Causeway Bay park between September 17 and 27, complementing other festive activities such as the Fire Dragon Dance in the nearby Tai Hang neighbourhood.

To help readers get into the spirit of the festival, the South China Morning Post lists the latest additions to this lantern extravaganza.

1. Did someone say lanterns?

A highlight of the show is the World Lantern Boulevard, which will showcase more than 3,000 distinctive lanterns from 20 countries and regions, such as South Korea and Brazil.

The moment visitors walk through the park’s main entrance, they will be greeted by the sight of “Shadowlight”. The eight-metre-tall lantern, inspired by the city’s iconic banyan trees, is the work of master artisans from Nanjing and features a colourful array of lights.

The event will also include four tailor-made giant Qinhuai lanterns, also made by Nanjing artisans.

Nanjing’s Qinhuai lantern craftsmanship is known internationally and included on China’s national list of intangible cultural heritage.

Another highlight, “Lotus Fish”, features rows of giant lotus leaves in neat formation, accompanied by brightly coloured carp that shine against the backdrop of a concrete forest.
