The US embassy to Israel, based in Jerusalem, has announced it will close for the next three days amid the escalating conflict.

In a notice posted online, the embassy said all staff and their families had been directed to "shelter in place" in the coming days.

"Given the security situation and in compliance with Israel Home Front Command guidance, the US Embassy in Jerusalem will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday, June 18) through Friday (June 20)," the notice read.

"We have no announcement about assisting private US citizens to depart at this time.

"We will alert the US citizen community if there is additional information to share regarding departure options."

Albanese says Australia has not been asked to contribute to any potential international intervention in the Middle East.

Several European leaders have looked at the possibility, with UK PM Keir Starmer positioning fighter jets in the region.

Albanese said Australia's "European friends" understood Australia's focus was "where we are in the world" - seemingly, the Asia-Pacific region.

"And so, no, is the clear answer to that," he said.

He confirmed he had been briefed on the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict.

Israel has confirmed it is carrying out strikes against Iran's capital of Tehran.

Earlier, the Israeli military issued a warning.

It told residents in Tehran's District 18 to evacuate an area that it highlighted in a post on X.

It warned that it would carry out strikes against military infrastructure there.

"Your presence in this area will put your life in danger," it said.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is speaking to media at the G7 Summit in Canada.

While his prepared remarks mostly focus on his meetings with world leaders and high-level officials, he did touch on the ongoing Middle East crisis.

"As the world is watching the development in the Middle East, it is our collective responsibility to work together to uphold and defend security and economic prosperity," he said.

"And the G7 brings together major economies and Democratic countries."

As the White House weighs options for the US, missile exchanges continue between Israel and Iran.

The Israeli Defence Force said on X that Iran had launched two waves of strikes in less than an hour, sending people "running for shelter".

Iranian media outlet Mehr News Agency, in turn, claimed local air defences were knocking Israeli missiles out of the sky over Tehran.

US Representatives Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna have sponsored a resolution that calls on Trump to "terminate" the use of US armed forces against Iran unless "explicitly authorised" by a declaration of war from Congress.

"No president should be able to bypass Congress's constitutional authority over matters of war," Khanna, a Democrat from California, said in a statement.

"The American people do not want to be dragged into another disastrous conflict in the Middle East."

More than a dozen Democratic lawmakers signed onto the bill as a co-sponsor.

Massie, from Kentucky, is the only Republican on the bill so far.

"The ongoing war between Israel and Iran is not our war," Massie said.

"Even if it were, Congress must decide such matters according to our Constitution."

A vote on the resolution is not imminent as the House is out of Washington this week.

Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have reportedly spoken by phone.

That's according to a White House official who was not authorised to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The official didn't offer any details about the call.

Trump is growing "warmer" towards the idea of a strike on Iran with US military assets, sources have told CNN.

It mirrors an ongoing shift in the commander-in-chief's tone - less than a week ago he said publicly he hoped Israel did not attack Iran, as it would endanger the ongoing negotiations with the US.

But just hours ago, Trump posted a two-word demand for "unconditional surrender" on Truth Social.

"I'm not too much in the mood to negotiate with Iran," he told reporters on Air Force One when departing the Group of 7 summit yesterday.

However, the sources also told CNN Trump remained open to a diplomatic solution - but it would have to involve a lot of concessions from Tehran.
