England's tactics in the second-half have been heavily criticised following their loss to Argentina but Dan Burn maintains their gameplan worked - as had their defensive tweaks in the past

England's Dan Burn believes the team "can't take massive criticism" for their defensive approach against Argentina as they'd enjoyed success with it in the past.

The Three Lions were undone by the world champions, who scored twice in the final 10 minutes to secure their spot in the final. England had withstood their pressure up until the 85th minute after Anthony Gordon had given them the lead.

Thomas Tuchel had turned to his defenders in wins over Mexico and Norway, when England had to see out one-goal leads, and again tried it against Argentina. Their quality told however with Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez both scoring.

As a result, England's coach and his tactics were called out post-match for being too negative. The Three Lions showed little desire to press home their advantage, but Burn claims it was entirely normal that they turned to a tried and tested method.

He said: "I thought that we nailed the game plan up until we scored. I thought we did really well. We knew what Argentina were going to do, and I thought we dealt with it pretty well. And then we got a little bit passive after the goal. Defended probably a little bit too deep and the quality of chances that Argentina were creating.

"I thought it felt like it was a matter of time. I think we conceded too many crosses and too many chances, and I think it's hard because in the previous games we've defended those so well. So, I don't think that we can take massive criticism for going into that."

Tuchel has stuck by his decisions and maintained that coaches will always cop criticism for the changes they make, even if they have previously earned praise for the same gameplan.

Burn confessed that England had surpassed expectations and there was a genuine feeling that they were going to a first final since 1966.

"Obviously, I'm very gutted right now, but I'm so proud of what the team has done," he said. "We don't even think anyone gave us a chance coming into this.

"The brotherhood that we spoke about just took us a long way, and if I'm being honest, I thought we'd do it. I just had that feeling that this was our time, but I think Argentina showed why they're world champions and they've been there and they've done it."
