International sales revenue generated from electricity exported from all countries totaled US$59.8 billion in 2024.

Overall, the value of electrical energy exports accelerated by an average 105.1% for all exporting countries since 2020 when electricity exports were worth $29.2 billion.

Year over year, the value of globally exported electricity fell by -16.5% compared to $71.7 billion for 2023.

The world’s 5 biggest electricity exporters are European suppliers France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Slovakia. Collectively, that cohort of major electricity suppliers furnished over a third (35.8%) of globally exported electricity during 2024.

Among continents, exporters in Europe sold the highest dollar worth of electricity during 2024 with shipments valued at $45.8 billion or 76.5% of the world total.

In second place were electricity exporters in Asia at 11.2%. Another 5.3% originated from North America, ahead of international suppliers in Africa (3.6%), then Latin America (3.4%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for electrical energy is 2716. Note that electricity is classified under the catch-all mineral fuels-related products category (prefixed with 27).

Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of electricity during 2024.

Countries Earning Largest Trade Surpluses from Electricity

The following countries posted the highest positive net exports for electricity during 2024. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the surplus between the value of each country’s exported electricity and its import purchases for that same commodity.

  1. France: US$5.5 billion (net export surplus up 28% since 2023)
  2. Laos: $2.2 billion (down -1.1%)
  3. Switzerland: $2.07 billion (up 90.2%)
  4. Austria: $1.62 billion (down -24.1%)
  5. mainland China: $1.57 billion (up 3.4%)
  6. Norway: $1.45 billion (down -20%)
  7. Canada: $1.32 billion (down -33%)
  8. Sweden: $1.28 billion (down -21.1%)
  9. Czech Republic: $1.25 billion (down -5%)
  10. India: $1.19 billion (down -20.2%)

  14. Slovenia: $649.2 million (up 9.2%)
  15. Spain: $587.2 million (down -52%)

European powerhouse France generated the highest surplus in the international trade of electricity. In turn, the positive cashflow confirms its strong competitive advantages for this specific product category.

Countries Incurring Worst Trade Deficits from Electricity

The following countries posted the highest negative net exports for electricity during 2024. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the deficit between the value of each country’s imported electricity purchases and its exports for that same commodity.

  1. Italy: -US$5.1 billion (net export deficit down -22.6% since 2023)
  2. United Kingdom: -$3.2 billion (up 5.3%)
  3. Germany: -$2.2 billion (up 180.5%)
  4. Thailand: -$1.9 billion (up 4.3%)
  5. Hungary: -$1.8 billion (down -6.5%)
  6. United States: -$1.4 billion (down -37.5%)
  7. Bangladesh: -$1.1 billion (down -23.3%)
  8. Portugal: -$885.2 million (down -9.9%)
  9. Hong Kong: -$869.9 million (up 4.5%)
  10. Brazil: -$848.4 million (up 68.2%)

  14. Croatia: -$555.9 million (up 387.2%)
  15. Romania: -$553.2 million (reversing a $52 million surplus)

Italy incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of electricity. In turn, this negative cashflow highlights Italy’s strong competitive disadvantage for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for electricity-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful demand.
