Two days after Albertans voted in a provincewide referendum, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith took questions from reporters in Calgary. Smith said for as long as she is premier, she “will honour this mandate from Albertans and will not be holding another referendum on this issue.” The outcome of the referendum’s separatism question mirrors more than half a year of polling, which since the beginning of 2026, consistently showed about 70 per cent of Albertans wanted the province to remain in Canada.
