Tibetans expressed joy and sadness on Monday, as celebrations began marking the 90th birthday of the Dalai Lama. Followers of the exiled spiritual leader said they were overjoyed to be able to celebrate the milestone birthday but expressed sorrow that celebrations could not be held in front of Tibet’s historic Potala Palace. As he approaches his 90th year, the Dalai Lama said Monday that there would be a “framework” for his succession. Some have expressed concern about what the exiled leader’s death might mean for the future of the Tibetan people. “Yes, we are worried … the big storm is coming,” Tenzin Lekshay, the official spokesperson for the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, said earlier in the week, adding that the Tibetan people would persevere.
