EXCLUSIVE: The Beckham family were in attendance at England's heartbreaking World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, and Cruz had some touching words for his devastated dad Sir David

The Beckham family were among those left devastated by England's crushing World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, and a lip reader picked up Cruz's touching words to his dad Sir David after the final whistle.

It has been 60 years since the Three Lions reached a World Cup final and the wait goes on after late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez wiped out England's lead.

Sir David Beckham and wife Lady Victoria were among the fans desperately hoping for a different outcome. They were joined in Atlanta by their children Romeo, Harper, Cruz and Cruz's girlfriend, Jackie Apostel.

As Argentina's players celebrated and England's slumped to the turf, Cruz had some kind words for his dad.

Lip reader Jeremy Freeman reported that Cruz, wearing his dad's famous number seven shirt, asked Sir David after the final whistle: "You OK?" The pair then shared a warm embrace.

Jeremy analysed a separate clip where Cruz asked Sir David: "How did we..." before trailing off.

Sir David, 51, has experienced his own share of tournament heartbreak on the pitch for England. He featured for his country in five major tournaments, and three World Cups, never making it past the quarter-finals.

He was famously sent off for kicking Diego Simeone when England lost on penalties to Argentina in the 1998 World Cup. In a strange quirk of fate one of Diego's sons, Giuliano, started last night's game for Argentina.

Sir David then tasted redemption when he scored the winning penalty against the old rival in 2002.

The former Manchester United star posted after the game in Atlanta: "Heartbreak for us all but memories that inspire and last forever.

"Thank you to our team, our fans & our country for what you have given us in this World Cup."

The former England captain and his family have been regular fixtures at England games during this summer's World Cup.

He was even forced to defend his wife after her less than ecstatic response to Jude Bellingham's extra-time winner in the quarter-final win over Norway.

Photos of her non-existent celebration went viral and Sir David later said: "She was celebrating inside I promise, her reactions were slightly slower than mine."

In her husband's Netflix documentary Lady Victoria explained why she always appears so stoney-faced - it's because her husband apparently always stand on her good side.

She said: “Now I didn’t realise that when I smile - which I do! - I smile from the left, because if I smile from the right, I look unwell. So I'm smiling on the inside but no one ever sees it. So, that’s why I look so moody.”

England now go on to face France in Saturday's third-place play off in Miami. Anthony Gordon gave them the lead in Atlanta but they couldn't hold on.

It became a familiar tale of semi-final heartbreak as England have only won one of their four World Cup matches at this stage - a 2-1 victory over Portugal in 1966 before eventually lifting the trophy.
