When a couple first started renovating their 1920s home, they made a seriously incredible discovery underneath the grubby carpet. People have been saying they "hit the jackpot"

Renovating your home can bring up all kinds of surprises. You may uncover dodgy electrics, hidden mould or leaks as you start doing DIY on your property.

However, not all projects end in bad news. In fact, there are plenty of people who come across beautiful details in their houses that they’d never noticed before. And that’s exactly what happened to a Yorkshire couple recently.

Kim Barker and her partner are currently undertaking a long renovation project on their “neglected 1920s forever home”. Then on the very first day of the project, they stumbled across something incredible. When pulling up the grimy carpet, they found gorgeous flooring.

Taking to Instagram after “hitting the jackpot”, the 39-year-old said: “Our first lucky find. Underneath the most disgusting carpet you’ll ever see, we have discovered the original terrazzo flooring. She needs a bit of love, but it was a big win on day one!”

Terrazzo flooring is a hard-wearing, speckled surface made by embedding chips of stone (often marble, granite or glass) into a binder, then grinding and polishing it smooth.

It's a firm favourite among interior design fans because it's both stylish and durable – and the authentic flooring definitely looks a lot better than the grubby carpet that was there before!

Unsurprisingly, the discovery has lifted the couple's spirits during what will be a very gruelling renovation process.

Kim told Newsweek: "There is an overwhelming amount of work to do in the house, so discovering this was such a bonus and a real boost on day one."

She plans to keep the floor and restore it to its former glory, which will take some elbow grease.

Kim added: "The floor will become the main feature of the hallway, and all furniture, styling, decor, etc., will be designed around it. We are a bit of a way off from this, but I already can’t wait for the fun bit."

Kim's post garnered 2,800 likes and plenty of positive comments. One DIY fan gushed: "Amazing, what a find!"

Another said: "That’s absolutely beautiful - I’m wondering if it’s very cold in winter and that’s why the carpet was down - everything crossed you love whatever the season."

A third gushed: "Omg!!! That’s so nice." And a fourth added: "You lucky little bean! Imagine pulling up the carpet to find that stunning timeless design, the damage only adds to its character and the beauty of its story!"
