Orchid growers in Costa Rica are set to benefit from expanded export opportunities and significantly reduced operational costs when entering the United States market, following a major regulatory update announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG).

Under the updated phytosanitary measure, exporters of orchids from the Phalaenopsis sp. genus are now permitted to ship plants in their original growing medium.

Previously, international regulations required growers to remove the soil and substrate in which the plants were cultivated and replace it with a new growing medium. This process created substantial financial burdens by demanding additional labor, extra preparation time, root washing, disinfection, and secondary chemical treatments.

Key Improvements for Producers

Reduced Labor Expenses: Eliminates the necessity of manual root stripping, soil washing, and secondary substrate application.

Streamlined Preparation: Faster packing and shipping preparation times before export.

Cost Efficiency: Lower overall expenses required to place ornamental plants in North American retail markets.

Protecting Sensitive Plants During Transit

According to the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Juan Ramírez, Phalaenopsis orchids are particularly sensitive to root handling and transplanting. Forcing root removal before transit subjected the plants to severe physiological stress and heightened the risk of damage.

Specialists from the State Phytosanitary Service (SFE) emphasized several biological advantages of the new rule:

1. Lower Stress & Dehydration: Keeping orchids in their original medium minimizes physiological shock and moisture loss.
2. Improved Transit Survival: Reduces plant mortality and damage during air or sea freight to the U.S.
3. Faster Recovery: Plants arrive in healthier condition, recovering quickly once delivered to U.S. buyers and consumers.

With this strategic policy change, MAG aims to strengthen the international competitiveness of Costa Rica’s ornamental plant industry while consolidating the nation’s reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality agricultural exports.
