In response, health authorities have immediately activated strict epidemiological investigation protocols to contain the virus and prevent further transmission.
The infected individuals are two men, aged 25 and 55, both residing in the province of San José. Authorities have kept further personal details confidential to protect patient privacy.
What’s Happening Now: Costa Rican health officials have launched a contact-tracing operation to monitor anyone who was in close proximity to the patients, ensuring all necessary preventative measures are in place.
How is Monkeypox Transmitted?
According to the official statement from the Ministry of Health, monkeypox is a viral disease that spreads primarily through close, physical, skin-to-skin contact with an infected person.
The virus can be transmitted through:
- Direct contact with skin lesions or blisters.
- Exposure to body fluids or prolonged face-to-face respiratory secretions.
- Handling contaminated personal items, such as bedding, clothing, or towels used by an infected individual.
Key Symptoms to Watch For
The most distinct sign of the virus is the appearance of skin lesions that look like pimples or blisters. While they can erupt anywhere on the body, they are most commonly found on the:
- Genital and perianal regions
- Face and mouth
- Hands and feet
These physical lesions are often accompanied by flu-like symptoms, including fever, severe headaches, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, and general fatigue.
Prevention and Official Recommendations
To prevent a wider outbreak, the Ministry of Health urges the public to remain vigilant and practice the following hygiene protocols:
| Do’s | Don’ts |
| Wash hands frequently with soap and water. | Avoid close physical or sexual contact with anyone showing symptoms. |
| Monitor your health if you’ve been exposed. | Do not share personal items (towels, utensils, bedding). |
The Ministry strongly advises anyone experiencing compatible symptoms or who suspects they have been exposed to the virus to visit the nearest health center immediately for evaluation.
