INS Malwan, the second of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWC) built by Cochin Shipyard Limited here, was delivered to the Indian Navy on Tuesday.

Indigenously designed and constructed as per Navy specifications and in line with DNV classification rules, the vessel is named after Malwan, a historic coastal town in Maharashtra associated with the maritime legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, an official release said. It also continues the legacy of the earlier INS Malwan minesweeper, decommissioned in 2003.

The 80-metre-long warship, with a displacement of around 1,100 tonnes, is equipped for underwater surveillance, anti-submarine warfare in coastal waters, low-intensity maritime operations, and mine warfare. It features waterjet propulsion, torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets, advanced radar, and sonar systems.

“With over 80% indigenous content, Malwan underscores India’s push for self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, integrating systems developed by domestic defence manufacturers, including MSMEs,” the release said.
