Global sales for cinnamon exported from all countries totaled US$821.9 million in 2024.

The overall value of cinnamon exports dropped by an average -20.5% for all exporting countries from five years earlier in 2020 when worldwide cinnamon shipments were valued at $1.03 billion.

Year over year, the growth in the value of globally exported cinnamon fell by -9.3% compared to $906.4 million starting in 2023.

The world’s top 5 exporters of cinnamon are Vietnam, Sri Lanka, mainland China, Indonesia and the Netherlands. That cohort of major suppliers generated 86.3% of the world’s spending on cinnamon exported during 2024. Such a high percentage suggests a relatively concentrated set of international suppliers for the popular spice.

From a continental perspective, 85.8% of worldwide spending on cinnamon exports was shipped from suppliers in Asia. Another 10.2% came from sources in Europe.

Smaller percentages originated from exporters in North America (2.6%), Africa (1.1%), Latin America (0.3%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, and Oceania (0.03%) mostly Australia.

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 0906 for cinnamon including cinnamon-tree flowers.

Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of cinnamon during 2024.

  1. Vietnam: US$226.9 million (27.6% of total cinnamon exports)
  2. Sri Lanka: $217.6 million (26.5%)
  3. mainland China: $125.4 million (15.3%)
  4. Indonesia: $112.2 million (13.7%)
  5. Netherlands: $27.2 million (3.3%)
  6. United States: $18 million (2.2%)
  7. Germany: $13.7 million (1.7%)
  8. India: $13.6 million (1.7%)
  9. France: $7.3 million (0.9%)
  10. Madagascar: $6.9 million (0.8%)
  11. Austria: $6 million (0.7%)
  12. Poland: $5.8 million (0.7%)
  13. Spain: $4.5 million (0.5%)
  14. United Kingdom: $2.9 million (0.4%)
  15. Türkiye: $2.8 million (0.3%)

By value, the listed 15 countries shipped 96.2% of globally exported cinnamon in 2024.

Among the top exporters, the fastest-growing cinnamon exporters since 2023 were: Madagascar (up 66.7%), Türkiye (up 25.6%), India (up 16%) and Indonesia (up 12.6%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported cinnamon sales were led by: mainland China (down -33.4% from 2023), Poland (down -12.8%), Vietnam (down -11%), France (down -9.1%) and the United Kingdom (down -8.1%).

By value, the 100 countries showcased in the following automated database were responsible for 99.998% of globally exported cinnamon during 2024.

The fastest year-over-year export gainers were suppliers in Fiji (up 1,200% from 2023), Iran (up 544.4%), Honduras (up 533.3%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (up 466.7%), Nicaragua (up 150%) then Chile (up 148.9%).

Countries Reaping Largest Trade Surpluses from Cinnamon

The following countries posted the highest positive net exports for cinnamon during 2024. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the surplus between the value of each country’s exported cinnamon and its import purchases for that same commodity.

  1. Sri Lanka: US$217.2 million (net export surplus up 3.8% since 2023)
  2. Vietnam: $215.3 million (down -2%)
  3. mainland China: $119.7 million (down -35.3%)
  4. Indonesia: $101.6 million (up 12.8%)
  5. Netherlands: $12.4 million (up 54.5%)
  6. Madagascar: $6.9 million (up 67.2%)
  7. Tanzania: $623,000 (up 45.9%)
  8. Estonia: $586,000 (down -45.6%)

Sri Lanka then highly populated Vietnam and mainland China generated the highest surpluses in the international trade of cinnamon. In turn, this positive cashflows confirm these countries’ strong competitive advantages for this specific product category.

Countries Causing Worst Trade Deficits from Cinnamon

The following countries posted the highest negative net exports for cinnamon during 2024. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the deficit between the value of each country’s imported cinnamon purchases and its exports for that same commodity.

  1. United States: -US$140.2 million (net export deficit up 5.3% since 2023)
  2. Mexico: -$87.3 million (down -8.2%)
  3. India: -$83.6 million (down -16.1%)
  4. Peru: -$23.3 million (up 4.2%)
  5. Saudi Arabia: -$17.6 million (up 33.0%)
  6. Canada: -$17.4 million (up 8.6%)
  7. Bangladesh: -$17.1 million (down -48.1%)
  8. United Kingdom: -$13.5 million (up 8.6%)
  9. United Arab Emirates: -$13.3 million (up 1278.7%)
  10. Pakistan: -$11.9 million (up 27.2%)
  11. Japan: -$11.0 million (down -3.4%)
  12. Colombia: -$10.3 million (up 35.3%)
  13. Iran: -$9.69 million (up 11.6%)

The United States of America incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of cinnamon. In turn, this negative cashflow highlights America’s competitive disadvantage for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for cinnamon-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful consumer demand.
