Paul Pogba has left Monaco a year before his contract was due to expire after failing to overcome persistent injuries.

The 33-year-old has seen his time in the Principality disrupted by fitness problems and both parties have decided to terminate their agreement.

Pogba joined Monaco in June 2025 but managed to play just 115 minutes across six games last season.

A club statement read: “Having jointly concluded that the objectives initially set were only partially achieved, AS Monaco and Paul Pogba have decided, ahead of the first match of the new season, to bring an end to the contract that was due to run until June 2027. The club would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to the 2018 World Cup winner for the trust he placed in the institution and for the utmost professionalism he demonstrated throughout his time in Monaco.

“During his spell in Monaco colours, Paul displayed a remarkable mindset, unwavering determination and the highest standards at every moment. Through all his efforts, he was able to return to top-level competition after a long period away from the game, while also sharing his experience and expertise with the first-team squad.

“Monaco sincerely thanks Paul and wishes him every success in the future.”

What next for Pogba?

Pogba made his debut for Monaco at Rennes last November, his first appearance for 811 days after serving a doping ban.

He was initially handed a four-year suspension after testing positive for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) while playing for Juventus but that was later reduced to 19 months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Following the ruling, Pogba and Juventus agreed to part ways and he linked up with Monaco.

Having suffered with a calf problem throughout his first season at the club, he got himself fit and played 45 minutes against Saint-Priest on July 18 only to break down again with a thigh injury suffered in training.

Pogba has not played more than 20 games in a single season since the 2021/22 campaign when he was still at Manchester United.

The midfielder said: “I would like to thank the President and the management, my team-mates, all the staff members and every supporter who believed in me. Representing this club and the principality was an incredible experience. AS Monaco is an incredible club and although I did not play as many games as I had hoped, I will always be grateful for the opportunity to wear their colours.”

Monaco CEO lavishes praise on Pogba

Although Pogba failed to make much of an impression on the pitch, Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro hailed his professionalism off it.

Scuro told the club’s official website: “On behalf of the club, I would simply like to say thank you to Paul. We are very happy to have shared this journey together. When he joined, we explained that this was a major challenge, that was audacious and ambitious.

“While the outcome is not what we had hoped for, it should not overshadow the enthusiasm that surrounded his return to club football, nor the fact that Paul was able to return to the pitch and to professional football during this period. What he brought to the dressing room, particularly to the younger players with whom he constantly shared his vast experience and offered valuable advice, was precious. His attitude was exemplary throughout, demonstrating the qualities of the outstanding champion that he is. We wish Paul all the very best for the future.”
