Oil Tankers Navigating the Strait of Hormuz
Recent military actions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran have caused significant disturbances to global maritime traffic, particularly affecting oil tanker operations. These tensions have led to disruptions that are now impacting the flow of shipping traffic in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping passage bordered by Iran and Oman, is at the heart of this disruption. The blockage and congestion in this crucial waterway have created challenges not just for the oil industry but for various other sectors reliant on maritime trade.
The repercussions on shipping are substantial. According to insights from trade analysis firm Kpler, approximately 33% of the world’s fertilizers, such as sulfur and ammonia, are transported through the Strait of Hormuz. This passage is essential for ferrying these materials from nations like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to global markets.
The fertilizers, once loaded onto cargo vessels, are dispatched to a wide array of destinations, including major agricultural markets in India, China, Brazil, and several African nations. The ongoing maritime disruptions could therefore have far-reaching effects on global fertilizer supply chains.
Loaded onto cargo ships in Qatar, Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates, these fertilizers have diverse destinations ranging from India and China to Brazil and African countries.
The conflict in the Middle East also threatens a major polymer export hub in the United Arab Emirates, according to an analysis published Monday by the consulting firm Argus Media.
The firm said the region produces up to 23 million tons of polyethylene – one of the most widely used plastics in the world – annually, representing 15 percent of global production.
The shipping conditions also disrupt the arrival of cargo to the Middle East, a region that relies in part on food imports.
Many transports pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
During a June 2015 US military operation in Iran, for example, entire shipments of rice destined for the region were blocked in India.
