The mid-summer point has seen a turnaround in box office reports with Pixar’s Toy Story 5 soaring to take the number one spot at 2026’s box office, thanks to a total of exactly $1,022,055,658 from a domestic gross of $448 million and an international one of $573 million. The animated family sequel, directed by Andrew Stanton, centred on the beloved gang of toys, is the studio’s 31st feature film release and the fifth instalment in their Toy Story series, delivering a record-breaking weekend debut for the franchise, grossing $312 million worldwide. These numbers placed Toy Story 5 as 2026’s ninth-highest-grossing release around the 22nd of June, with ongoing ticket sales helping it climb eight spots in just over a month.

Additionally, this means Toy Story 5 has grossed $772 million more than its initial budget of $250 million.

Now, the film has beaten the previous top spot holder, which is another animated sequel but based on already existing material. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is based on the video game franchise, has now been pushed down to second place with its global earnings of $1,011,157,101, made from $429,814,610 domestically and $581,342,491, coming in with a $10,898,557 difference between the two films.

Third place goes to Antoine Fuqua’s musical biopic Michael, with its current global box office gross of $1,010,238,388. Starring Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson, the film has broken record after record at the box office and is now the highest-grossing biopic ever made.

Meanwhile, Pixar’s highest-grossing release of all time worldwide is Inside Out 2, which grossed $1,698,863,816 at the box office from a domestic total of  $652,980,194 and an international one of $1,045,883,622.

Other box office news sees Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey sailing to $639 million after two weeks, taking home  $284.4 million in domestic sales and $353.2 million overseas. Reports have shared that the film’s glossy, enticing IMAX presentation has accounted for $140 million of those earnings, with Nolan’s 13th release being the first-ever feature film to be shot on IMAX with 70 mm film cameras. The Odyssey is adapted from the Greek Epic poem by Homer of the same title and features a star-studded cast.
