A building wing in Thane’s Bhiwandi in Maharashtra collapse late Thursday (July 30, 2026), killing at least nine so far. Rescue operations are under way, officials said on Friday morning (July 31, 2026), estimating that seven to eight other people remain trapped under the debris.

The incident occurred between 11-11.30 p.m. on Thursday (July 30, 2026), when a section of the Kohinoor Building gave way.

The structure, a four-storey building with 48 rooms (12 on each floor), had been declared unfit for occupation by the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation. Repair work was in progress at the time of the collapse, according to the Thane Municipal Corporation Disaster Management Cell.

After reportedly hearing cracking sounds between 8-9 p.m, several families evacuated from the building with the assistance of neighbours. However, some occupants who remained inside to collect belongings were trapped when the 'B Wing' collapsed.

PM Modi mourns loss of lives; announces ex-gratia relief

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives, and announced an ex gratia relief of ₹2 lakh to the next of kin of those who died and ₹50,000 to the injured.

“Pained to hear about the loss of lives due to the collapse of a building in Thane, Maharashtra. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. May the injured recover at the earliest,” Mr. Modi said in a post on X.

Authorities had earlier estimated that seven to eight persons, including Shamji Pal (46), Santosh Pandey alias Munna (42), Miraj Sheikh (35), and some unidentified workers, remained trapped under the debris.

A major multi-agency rescue operation is under way, comprising teams from the National Disaster Response Force, Thane Disaster Response Force and local fire brigade. A dog squad, four fire engines, two ambulances, and heavy earth-moving machinery has been deployed at the site.
