Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany was rushed to hospital after collapsing at the club’s training ground on Friday.

The former Manchester City and Belgium defender’s condition was reported to be stable, the 40-year-old having collapsed while watching Bayern’s reserve team train.

According to a report from Sky Sport Germany, an ambulance transported Kompany to hospital from Sabener Strasse, where a helicopter was reported to have landed in response to the incident.

A statement from Bayern read: “Vincent Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during an FC Bayern reserve team training session on Friday.

“The first-team head coach was watching the second string’s session. Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care. His coaching staff will oversee training and match activities until further notice.”

Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, said: “Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery.

“Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”

Kompany has been dealing with a viral infection that has forced him to miss several training sessions.

The 40-year-old was in the dugout for Bayern’s 6-1 Bundesliga win over RB Leipzig last weekend but did not take part in any media commitments.

Kompany was also present for Bayern’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday despite his illness.

Bayern, who lead the Bundesliga on goal difference from Borussia Dortmund, visit third-placed Freiburg on Sunday.
