Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers worldwide, with more than 2.3 million new cases diagnosed each year.

In light of this, AstraZeneca is intensifying its scientific research efforts to develop targeted treatments for different subtypes and stages of the disease.

The company emphasizes that current knowledge allows us to understand breast cancer as a group of tumors with different biological characteristics.

This advance has driven the development of targeted therapies that act more specifically on cancer cells.

AstraZeneca noted that for decades it has been working to develop therapeutic solutions for different types of breast cancer.

In addition to scientific development, the company promotes an approach centered on the needs of each patient and on a better understanding of the disease.

As part of this commitment, the drugs Enhertu (trastuzumab deruxtecan) and Truqap (capivasertib) have become available in the country to expand the range of treatment options.

“We continue to work to transform the reality and outcomes for these patients and the way the disease is addressed through scientific research and the development of innovative therapies,” said Dr. Andrés Rojas, Medical Director for Central America and the Caribbean at AstraZeneca.

The specialist added that the goal is to move toward more precise treatments that offer new opportunities to patients at different stages of the disease.

Enhertu is intended for tumors that express the HER2 protein, which is associated with the growth of certain types of breast cancer.

According to information provided by the company, scientific advances have made it possible to identify tumors with low and very low levels of HER2.

In patients with metastatic, hormone receptor-positive breast cancer who are HER2-low or HER2-ultra-low, the DESTINY-Breast06 study showed favorable results compared to chemotherapy.

Furthermore, Truqap is presented as a new alternative for patients with advanced or metastatic hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer.

The treatment works by blocking a protein called AKT, which is linked to mechanisms that promote the growth and survival of tumor cells.

“Today we are seeing how both therapies allow us to take a personalized approach and tailor treatment to the specific characteristics of the tumor,” said Dr. Rojas.

The doctor noted that this approach expands treatment options and opens up new possibilities for improving clinical outcomes for patients.

AstraZeneca noted that breast cancer continues to have a significant impact in Latin America and Costa Rica.

The company reported that more than 1,300 new cases and more than 420 deaths are recorded in the country each year.

In the face of this challenge, research and development of new therapies aim to slow the progression of the disease and improve patient survival.

AstraZeneca reiterated its commitment to continuing to drive scientific innovation and the development of treatments to transform the approach to breast cancer.
