Gandhi siblings recast Wayanad politics, but local fault lines persist

The Gandhi siblings have redrawn the map of Wayanad’s electoral politics. What was once a quiet Lok Sabha seat came into the national spotlight in 2019, when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi chose it as his second constituency, after Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

He won decisively, defeating P.P. Suneer of the Communist Party of India (CPI) by over 4.31 lakh votes, and securing the highest margins across all seven Assembly segments — Mananthavady, Sulthan Bathery, and Kalpetta in Wayanad district; Eranad, Nilambur, and Wandoor in Malappuram; and Thiruvambadi in Kozhikode.

Despite the Rahul wave of 2019, the CPI (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) managed to win three — Mananthavady, Thiruvambadi, and Nilambur — of the seven segments in the 2021 Assembly election.

Thrissur braces for a three-cornered thriller with no easy winner in sight

This time, the LDF has opted for an unconventional face. Sitting MLA and CPI leader P. Balachandran is not in the fray. The front has fielded writer, speaker and cultural figure Alankode Leelakrishnan. Though a debutant in electoral politics, he is no stranger to public life.

The UDF has fielded former Mayor Rajan Pallan, presenting him as an energetic local administrator with deep roots in the city’s civic politics. He rose through the Youth Congress and has served as block secretary and constituency president.

For the NDA, Padmaja Venugopal brings familiarity, recall a sharply political-personal story. Though a first-time BJP Assembly candidate here, she is no outsider to Thrissur. Born and raised in the city, K. Karunakaran’s daughter has contested from here earlier as a Congress candidate, twice to the Assembly, before later quitting the Congress and joining the BJP. Now a BJP national council member, she is making her third bid for the Assembly.

BJP out to claim its share in Bihar: Kishor on Nitish's exit as CM

Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor on Saturday (March 21, 2026) alleged that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was giving up his post since the BJP, which has been in power at the Centre and had played a key role in securing a “manufactured mandate” for the NDA in the assembly polls last year, was out to “claim its share”.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function organised here on the occasion of Id, Mr. Kishor reiterated that Kumar, who heads the JD(U), was “physically and mentally unfit” for ruling the State.

“I cannot say whether Nitish Kumar is leaving of his own accord or whether he is acting under pressure. But, in a way, I stand vindicated. I was being pilloried ahead of the assembly polls when I had predicted that even if the NDA wins, he will not be made the Chief Minister,” said Mr. Kishor, who is a former JD(U) vice president.

The 47-year-old also said, “My prediction that the NDA could lose may have been off the mark. But about Nitish Kumar, who is visibly unfit, physically and mentally, I have been proven right. Why else would a Chief Minister step down barely a few months after his coalition got a brute majority in the Assembly?”.

Ali’s sixth-term bid faces hurdle in Mankada as LDF weighs support for IUML rebel

A rebellion is brewing within the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in the Mankada constituency, with growing dissent against its sitting MLA Manjalamkuzhi Ali, who is seeking a sixth consecutive term in the Assembly.

The internal rift has come to the fore with the IUML’s former constituency president, Kunnath Mohammed, entering the fray as an Independent candidate against Mr. Ali. His move is widely seen as a direct challenge to the IUML leadership in the constituency.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF), which had earlier announced M.P. Alavi as its candidate, is now reportedly reconsidering its strategy. Mr. Alavi’s campaign has yet to take off, and his candidature appears to be in limbo, signalling that the LDF may consider backing the IUML rebel to consolidate anti-Ali votes.

Ticket rebellions, SIR voter churn add volatility to Bengal poll race

Open rebellions over ticket distribution across parties, combined with the SIR fallout, have added a fresh layer of uncertainty to West Bengal’s political landscape, raising questions over cadre cohesion and electoral calculations ahead of the Assembly polls.

Soon after candidate lists were announced, both the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP have witnessed protests, resignations, and resentment from cadres and leaders who have been denied tickets- a familiar feature of Bengal elections, but analysts say such resistance may carry greater electoral consequences this time.

The unrest has come at a politically sensitive moment as the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists has led to large-scale scrutiny and deletion of voter names, a development political observers believe could alter the electoral arithmetic in several closely contested seats.

Women ought to have been given more seats by Congress in Assembly polls: Satheesan

Congress leader V.D. Satheesan on Saturday (March 21, 2026) agreed that women ought to have been given more seats in the upcoming Assembly polls.

The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Kerala Assembly said that the party wanted to give more seats to women in the Assembly polls.

“We wanted to give more seats. Even I am not satisfied with that issue. It [seats given] was not enough,” he told reporters at Paravoor here.

His response comes a day after Congress national spokesperson Shama Mohamed expressed dissatisfaction over the low representation of women in the party’s candidate list for the upcoming Assembly elections on April 9.

From loss to comeback: Uma Thomas faces fresh test in Thrikkakara

With the April 9 Assembly polls approaching, the contest in Kerala’s Thrikkakara seat here has drawn unusual attention, shaped by personal loss, recovery of a contestant and an increasingly competitive three-cornered race.

The seat fell vacant in 2022 after the death of P.T. Thomas, a widely respected Congress leader, prompting a bypoll that brought his wife, Uma Thomas, into public office with a decisive mandate.

Her tenure was interrupted by a serious fall that left her with grievous injuries, keeping her away from public life for months before her return.

Renominated by the Congress, she is now in the fray alongside Pushpa Das of the CPI(M) and Akhil Marar, the BJP-led NDA’s candidate, making it a three-cornered contest.

Kerala Assembly Elections 2026: Women leaders raise voices of protest over denial of seat

In a post on her Facebook page on Friday, a day after the Congress put out its list of candidates, she said that only nine out of the 92 candidates of the party are women.

“I have been rejected, but not defeated. I request my leader Rahul Gandhi, whom I admire, respect, and adore, to help the Congress women of Kerala. In the Lok Sabha elections of 2024, only one woman was given a ticket out of the 16 persons who contested. If a woman happens to be talented, the situation is dire,” she wrote.
