Andhra Pradesh has emerged as one of India’s most progressive States in integrating sustainability into urban development, industrial growth and public infrastructure, according to the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), which said in a press release that the State has more than 638 IGBC-registered green building projects covering about 627.58 million sq ft.

IGBC Amaravati Chapter Chairman Vijaya Sai Meka said the projects included 438 commercial, 83 transit infrastructure, 57 residential, 37 industrial and logistics, 18 built environment and five net zero projects.

He said Andhra Pradesh had been creating an integrated network where urban planning, mobility, industrial development, renewable energy, resource efficiency and digital governance were collectively contributing to a low-carbon future. This approach is recognised as one of the most detailed State-led sustainability efforts in the country.

Mr. Vijaya Sai said the IGBC had been playing a key role in the State’s transformation by providing technical expertise, internationally benchmarked rating systems and policy support across sectors.

He said the government had introduced one of India’s most encouraging incentive packages for green buildings, under which developers constructing IGBC-certified multistorey buildings receive impact fee discounts of up to 20%, while the AP Real Estate Regulatory Authority refunds project registration fees of up to 20% on final IGBC certification.

Certified residential developments are given concessions on transfer charges, and industries adopting green building practices are incentivised through capital subsidies.

Mr. Vijaya Sai said Amaravati, the emerging greenfield capital city, was one of the most evident manifestations of Swarna Andhra 2047.

The master plan, conceived around principles of environmental sustainability, has various principles aligned with the IGBC green and net zero rating systems.

The next phase of the State’s sustainability journey would focus on scaling green buildings across every sector, expanding net zero infrastructure, integrating renewable energy into urban development, strengthening climate resilience and embedding sustainability into every new investment.

As Amaravati evolves into a model green capital and cities such as Visakhapatnam adopt advanced sustainability frameworks, Andhra Pradesh is well positioned to demonstrate how economic growth, environmental stewardship and technological innovation could progress together, Mr. Vijaya Sai added.
