Al Roker was left momentarily speechless after Carson Daly turned an ordinary weather handoff into an unexpectedly awkward moment on the Today show.
The 72-year-old meteorologist was preparing to deliver Monday’s forecast when an unexpected technical problem—and Daly’s unusual response—interrupted the segment.
Savannah Guthrie, joined by Daly and Sheinelle Jones—who was filling in for Craig Melvin—passed the broadcast over to Roker for the latest weather update.
Roker enthusiastically gestured toward his colleagues as he tried to answer, but his response quickly revealed that something was not working properly.
“Well guys, good morning,” Roker said, his voice muffled as he realized his microphone appeared to be off.
He immediately reached into his back pocket to check the microphone pack while the hosts called out suggestions from the desk.
“Just click it, push ‘on,’” Jones advised. Guthrie followed with a simpler suggestion: “Just talk really loud.”
Daly, however, had a very different solution in mind.

From off camera, Daly offered Roker his own microphone as the weather anchor continued tapping at his equipment pack.
Just as Roker appeared to resolve the technical issue, Daly stepped into view and wrapped him in an enormous bear hug.
“Oooh baby,” Roker exclaimed while Daly remained pressed closely against him.
Daly eventually released him, but the embrace seemed to leave Roker unsure of what to say next.
After a nervous chuckle, Roker collected himself and admitted: “That was… that was awkward.”
Guthrie then referenced the show’s recent broadcasts from Europe, joking, “We got really close in Ireland.”
“We did get a little too close as you can see,” Roker replied. “Luck of the Irish right there.”

He tugged at his suit jacket to straighten it before turning back toward the weather map and resuming the forecast.

The surprising exchange was not the first time in recent weeks that a Today show segment has been thrown off course.
Earlier this month, Roker, Melvin and Dylan Dreyer had been co-hosting the third hour of the morning show when things took a turn for the worse.
Guest Dr Natalie Azar had been midway through discussing a new weight loss drug when another woman suddenly walked across the screen in the background.
The doctor quickly came to a halt, as she shared: ‘I just totally lost my train of thought.’
Dreyer jumped in to spare her blushes as she revealed that senior producer Cecilia Fang, who has worked for NBC since 2000, had just made an unexpected cameo appearance.
Dr Azar tried to gather her thoughts before Melvin then interrupted once again to ask: ‘Is that someone on the floor?’

Al Roker explained the situation as the cameras cut to the interloper crouching down in an attempt to hide before rushing off set.
‘She’s also in the witness protection program. So she didn’t realize she was on camera,’ meteorologist Roker joked of Fang’s fleeting appearance.
Melvin expressed that he had ‘never seen that’ during his career in the studio.
Shaking his head, he jokingly added: ‘This place.’
