A two-day summit hosted by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and White House technology adviser Michael Kratsios will promote a "pro-growth vision for the future of emerging technologies," according to a statement from Kratsios, previously with data firm Scale AI.

The meeting comes shortly after a United Nations panel warned that rapid advancements in artificial intelligence are outpacing both regulatory frameworks and scientific comprehension. Security concerns have also intensified after a breach at AI platform Hugging Face, triggered by a rogue OpenAI agent.

Such AI agents function as autonomous software programs that operate with minimal human oversight.

A White House official confirmed that the U.S. delegation will actively urge participating countries not to create new regulatory bodies to govern AI development.

High-profile technology executives are scheduled to address the delegates. On Wednesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang will appear alongside Lutnick.

On Tuesday, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Meta executive Dina Powell McCormick, and David Sacks—a venture capitalist and former White House AI adviser—will deliver remarks via live video link.

The North Carolina gathering is part of a series of regional meetings scheduled across American cities ahead of the G-20 leaders' summit in Miami this December.

The Chinese embassy in Washington offered no comment on whether it would attend the talks. Meanwhile, open-weight AI systems from China, which make their core architecture publicly accessible, are closing the performance gap with proprietary models from leading American developers such as Anthropic and OpenAI.

The proliferation of these Chinese systems among U.S. firms has raised national security concerns regarding potential foreign interference.

"It has increased urgency for this administration to make sure that the rest of the world stays within the American tech ecosystem and doesn't seek alternatives," said Vivek Chilukuri, a technology and national security fellow at the Center for a New American Security.

A Canadian government spokesperson confirmed national officials will attend, noting their intent to advocate for an approach that balances innovation with "public trust and safety." The talks coincide with a trade conflict between the two nations that the U.S. president initiated.
