Last week, I rode the Oregon Cascades Volcanic Arc (OCVA), a 410-mile bikepacking route from Klamath Falls to Portland. As in most years, wildfires plagued the route, forcing me to cut my trip short at Detroit Lake after just four days of riding. The OCVA is truly special. If you ride the original route, you get a good mix of singletrack, doubletrack, gravel, and pavement. The highlights are the Middlefork Trail and McKenzie Bridge Trail. Both were well manicured when I rode them.

The route passes through areas devastated by wildfires, where entire forests have been stripped bare as far as the eye can see. There’s a heaviness to these places. You can sense that something terrible happened here, and that makes me sad. But it’s hard to put into words how much I love this state. Growing up here, I never fully appreciated how amazing this place is. I miss Oregon more than ever. This is where I fell in love with the outdoors. This is home.
